Encinitas Coastal Connections

Encinitas, CA Community

In our coastal community, the Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club (ECR) continues to make waves of positive change through their dedicated philanthropic efforts. This summer, following their successful annual Golf Ball Drop fundraiser in May 2025, the club distributed meaningful donations to three local nonprofit organizations that serve diverse community needs. Their ongoing commitment to community service highlights how local action can create ripple effects of goodwill throughout our neighborhood.

The Golf Ball Drop has become a signature event in Encinitas, bringing together residents for a day of fun while supporting important causes. Picture a helicopter hovering above as numbered golf balls cascade to the ground, accompanied by music, food, and community celebration. Beyond the entertainment value, this event represents something much deeper – the power of neighbors coming together to support those in need, fostering connections that strengthen our community.

The Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club’s annual Golf Ball Drop fundraiser symbolizes more than just charitable giving – it embodies the spirit of community partnership. This unique event features a helicopter releasing numbered golf balls while attendees enjoy music, food, and festivities. The creative approach to fundraising has proven effective year after year, allowing the club to support multiple worthy causes while creating memorable experiences for participants.

This year’s success enabled ECR to provide significant support to three local organizations: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego – Griset Ranch, Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, and Just in Time for Foster Youth. Each donation reflects the club’s thoughtful approach to philanthropy, targeting organizations that address different yet equally important community needs – from supporting children’s development to honoring veterans and helping young adults transition from foster care to independence.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego’s Griset Ranch location received a heartfelt donation that will directly impact local children’s lives. During the check presentation ceremony, club members shared personal stories about what the organization means to them – a safe haven after school, a place to form friendships, and an environment that fosters growth and encouragement. The genuine expressions of gratitude highlighted the real-world difference that Rotary’s support makes.

The children’s presentation of collaborative artwork to the Rotary Club symbolized the meaningful connection between the organizations. This colorful token of appreciation now serves as a visible reminder of the impact of community service. The Boys & Girls Club’s simple but powerful acknowledgment – “Thanks for all you do!” – speaks volumes about the value of this ongoing partnership and how it enriches young lives throughout Encinitas.

Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, the second beneficiary, provides essential support to post-9/11 veterans recovering from injury and transitioning to civilian life. Founder Sandy Lehmkuhler accepted the donation with gratitude, explaining how the funds will help provide transitional housing, mentoring, and pathways to independence for veterans. The Foundation’s social media post captured their appreciation: “We are so honored by this partnership. Such an amazing Club and so filled with positive energy!”

Just in Time for Foster Youth, represented by Director of Philanthropy Rajah Gainey, was the third organization to receive support. This vital nonprofit helps young adults transition out of the foster care system through programs focused on housing, education, financial literacy, and career development. The Rotary Club’s contribution will directly empower these young people during a critical life transition, helping them build skills for long-term self-sufficiency and success.

The philosophy that drives Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club’s community service extends far beyond financial donations. As Golf Ball Drop chairwoman Gretchen Mitchell expressed, “The Golf Ball Drop is not just a fun event—it’s a way to create real impact. These donations represent hope, dignity, and opportunity.” This perspective reflects Rotary’s core principle of “Service Above Self” – a commitment to putting community needs before individual interests.

The impact of ECR’s work reaches grateful children, determined veterans, and resilient young adults building their futures. Community service, as demonstrated by the club, isn’t simply about giving money – it’s about fostering connection, showing compassion, and creating lasting positive change. For those interested in joining this mission, the Encinitas Coastal Rotary meets on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at Cicciotti’s in Cardiff.
